One Set of Principles – Many Different Species

The biological principles of incubation are remarkably consistent across all egg-laying species. Every embryo depends upon the correct balance of heat, gas exchange, water loss and mechanical movement to develop successfully.

What differs between species is how those principles are applied.

Egg size, shell structure, incubation period, humidity requirements, cooling cycles and hatch behaviour have all evolved to suit the environment in which each species naturally breeds. Understanding these differences allows the incubator to be managed in ways that more closely reproduce nature.

This section explores the incubation of species whose requirements differ from those of the domestic chicken, while applying the same engineering principles described throughout this guide.
