Ultrasonic Foggers and Water Quality
These foggers contain a ceramic disc that vibrates at very high frequency. The resulting high frequency waves break the liquid water into microscopic airborne droplets, producing the visible fog.
Water quality has a major effect on the service life of the ceramic disc. Water that is significantly above or below neutral pH can leave deposits on the disc. (Remember that pH is logarithmic: for example, water with a pH of 8.0 is one hundred times more alkaline than water at pH 7.0.)
Alkaline water may leave calcium deposits, while acidic water may promote corrosion. Over time, these deposits foul the rim of the ceramic disc, causing it to vibrate off-frequency and eventually stop operating.
For this reason, Greatlander recommends monitoring your water quality and treating it if it is excessively acidic or alkaline. Tank rainwater contains whatever dust and contaminants settle on the roof, while town water is treated primarily for safety rather than for pH neutrality.
Because water quality varies enormously from one location to another, ultrasonic foggers are regarded as consumable items and are not covered by warranty. Even distilled water cannot guarantee a particular service life.
Before replacing the fogger, try the following:
- Soak the ceramic disc in CLR solution or white vinegar.
- Gently clean the disc and its rim with a soft toothbrush.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water and test again.
Ultrasonic pucks are inexpensive consumable components and can be replaced if cleaning does not restore operation.
